Why Do My Metrics Differ from Garmin, Wahoo, or TrainingPeaks?

Edited

It's normal to see small differences in average power, heart rate, pace, or other metrics between platforms.

Why Does This Happen?

Different platforms calculate metrics differently. Some devices and apps:

  • Include or exclude zero values.

  • Smooth or average data differently.

  • Fill gaps in recordings using different methods.

  • Display the values recorded by the device instead of recalculating them.

Vekta always recalculates metrics directly from the raw activity data to ensure consistency across all providers.

Missing Data Can Affect Results

If your device isn't recording every second, gaps may appear in the activity file. Each platform handles missing data differently, which can lead to differences in average heart rate, power, pace, and other metrics.

This is especially common when Garmin devices are set to Smart Recording instead of Every Second Recording.

Recommended Garmin Setting

For the most accurate analysis, we recommend enabling Every Second Recording on your Garmin device.

Why Is My Average Power Different?

Wahoo and Garmin devices can be configured to calculate average power with or without zero values.

For example:

  • Wahoo may display 170 W.

  • Vekta may display 134 W.

This happens because Garmin, Wahoo and TrainingPeaks often use the values provided by the device, while Vekta recalculates average power from the raw second-by-second data.

Which Value Is Correct?

Neither platform is necessarily wrong, they may simply be using different calculation methods.

At Vekta, all metrics are derived from the raw activity data. This ensures consistent and comparable values regardless of whether your sessions come from Garmin, Wahoo, Zwift, or other providers.

Still Seeing Large Differences?

If the discrepancy seems unusually large, please report your activity in Vekta. We're happy to investigate the underlying file and help determine the cause.
